This is a straight forward post. Setting a blog is not easy and requires a lot of effort! However anyone can do it. It is so worth doing it but the way getting to your perfect blog can be painful. My advice?
Never give up! Get prepared for a hundert things not working at first place and never be ashamed to ask if you are lost. Ask two times, three times, ten times. To simplify things you basically need three things to start. A DOMAIN NAME, a HOST and a WORDPRESS template with a theme to make it look pretty. This is not a step to step tutorial but if you have questions feel free to reach out and I can try to help you. You can save up to $2000 when you set up your blog or homepage on your own and not contacting a web agency or a designer.
This is a blogpost on how to start a blog from the beginning and then showing you the options, which your blog will give you in terms of earning money once you have content on your blog. First thing here: Do a blog because it is your passion! Your blog will never be successful if you just do it in order to get money. NEVER EVER! Content is king. Blog about topics that you are interested in and then second make your blog look nice and only if content and design is amazing, you can apply for Adsense, Gourmetads or other things available to you. So for now just skip the last thing and focus on the set up of your blog.
How to get started
So first thing you need to do is to set up your domain. Such as vanillacrunnch.com in my case. Think about a catchy creative name which you like. Make sure it is simple and short so people will remember. You can get your domain at GoDaddy. Many of my friends recommended me this leading domain registrar. You can choose your region and the follow the steps of the site.
A domain is very inexpensive. The more expensive part is the host you’ll need. For my blog I decided to go with Hostgator as they had the best deal for me and the steps are easy to follow for me as an absolutely untalented computer kid. As a starter I recommend to go with a starter kit.
After setting this up you have to set up WordPress. I found it pretty easy while I followed the steps of the Hostgator video tutorials.
Next to great content what a food photography and lifestyle blog needs is a great Design. I am very picky when it comes to themes and designs. I was looking for a very clean design but still with a lot of features and it had to be a responsible design, which means it looks also food on phones and ipads etc. After scrolling through a #feltlike thousand themes ranging from „for free“ up to „$300“ I decided to go with the KINDRED THEME. It is a minimal and clean full-width blog design shows off your greatly good quality pictures, is clearly structured with a lot of customizable options.
Further it has a custom-designed recipe shortcode made just for Kindred, as well as widgetized footer area and optional widgetized blog sidebar where you can show off your Instagram profile or other social networks or much more. And now the most crucial thing for me while I am still very happy with KINDRED after one year. Their support is amazing! Whenever you have a question you can make sure that someone answers it in less than one day and you can ask them as much as you want. Always friendly always helpful and very patient with beginner bloggers and Non-tech girls like me.
How to monetize your blog
Once you have your blog for a longer time and have a certain amount of people loving your blog and got familiar with all the features, widgets, plugins etc. (check out Youtube for things like that as they are many tutorial on topics like these) you can think about monetizing your blog. There are many different ways on how to monetize a blog but I recommend applying to Gourmetads or Adsense. If you have question on how to get accepted by these services feel free to ask.
Love,
Lara
