„Want to know what I ate in Hawaii?“
Come and join me to the best vegan and healthy places.
During my stay in Hawaii, I ate at so many different places! Most of them were just common places like California Pizza Kitchen or some Thai restaurants. At these places, it is pretty easy to order vegan. For example, at California Pizza Kitchen I ordered the artichoke-spinach Pizza with gluten-free thin crust and I asked them to substitute the cheese with extra mushrooms. No problem 🙂
At Asian places (such as P.F Chang’s) your best bet is the no-oil rice with fresh veggies. They are happy to prepare the veggies steamed instead of sautéed for you.
Well in this blog post I like to speak about more, let’s say special places. Places, which I thought are worth visiting with offerings that you might not come across in your country or town.
I picked 6 places, five in Honolulu and one in Haleiwa. Haleiwa is located on the North Shore and definitely worth visiting to escape the touristic everyday life of Honolulu.
1. Banan – A Nicecream girls dream coming true- There is a reason why Banan is mentioned at first place here.
As you might already suggest from the picture, Banan serves Nicecream, blended to perfection in a truck. Sitting outside of the food truck in a cozy summer grill party style location, having a view on Diamond Head (the mountain on Oahu) and enjoying a freshly made „Olena“ Nicecream (the Hawaiian word for ginger) sprinkled with coconut flakes, fresh bananas, and strawberries.
PERFECTION! CAN I PLEASE MOVE THERE?
2. Goofy – a typical Hawaiian cafe with a vegan chocolate breakfast bowl
Goofy is a nice little place, located on the second floor in a traditional Hawaiian building. You will spot surfers and easy-going peeps there. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner and the place is usually very crowded. For breakfast make sure you either go pretty early or have a late breakfast.
I was there for breakfast and decided to try the Berry Breakfast Bowl and the Chocolate Bowl. The waitress will be happy to serve you these dishes without the honey. The Chocolate Bowl is one of the best things I have ever had for breakfast and definitely a welcoming alternative to all the Acai bowls I’ve had. If you prefer salty for breakfast I recommend the „local greens“.
3. Heavenly Cafe – When you are tired of shopping and all the tourists
Heavenly cafe is definitely the spot you want to be when you are in the most touristic area of Honolulu called Waikiki beach. Heavenly cafe is not located at the big shopping street but just around the corner in a side passage. A natural health food all day cafe and diner place with a special Hawaiian ambiance. I highly recommend the pitaya bowl (although it is a little bit pricey) as it was the best I could find on the island. If you have dinner there ask the waitress about vegan options and they will be happy to adapt every menu to your wishes.
4. Greens and Vines – Only raw foods with the best chocolate brownie I’ve ever had
If you are fully raw or just want to try a fully raw meal once in your life, Greens and Vines is your best bet. Don’t get distracted by the well, not so nice restaurant atmosphere because the food is not only TOTALLY GLUTEN-FREE, GMO-FREE, and mostly locally grown ORGANIC with NO ANIMAL PRODUCTS of any kind. NO SEAFOOD, MEATS, DAIRY but also DELICIOUS!
I had the vegan lasagna and a raw chocolate brownie for desserts. I took the food takeaway and ate it at the beach which is a great thing to do as the restaurant has most of its menu items to takeaway.
The raw vegan restaurant was a unique experience for me and I would definitely go back again!
5. Simple Joy Vegan – Huge menu with a lot of options (be ready to read the menu for +10 minutes)
Simple Joy Vegan was everything I hoped for when I read the reviews on the internet. They menu is huge and you can find everything that you are looking for. The prizes are more than appropriate and you get a nice jar of mint and lemon water for free. They have a lot of fancy meal with „fake“ meat, which I am not really into, but it looked good on the tables next to me.
I decided to go for the basil pesto pasta as I was craving pasta so badly during my Hawaiian vacation! The place is casual and you can go with short pants and a t-shirt. You might want to make a reservation as it gets crowded at peak times.
6. Haleiwa Bowl – A tropical island spot in the middle of nowhere
According to the many Haleiwa inhabitants, there is only one place with the world’s best Acai bowls.
The holy Haleiwa place close to the ocean just some steps away from the only touristic place with some retail shops. Next to their traditional Acai bowls they also serve a range of additions to your bowl or smoothie such as Hawaiian Spirulina or fresh kale blends. I couldn’t resist and so I indulged on a Spirulina-Kale-Acai bowl, which was the bomb! The sweetness of the bananas totally overpowered the Spirulina and Kale flavor, so no need to be afraid. there is no easier way than getting in your greens in the most fun way ever!
For topping try the homemade granola and the cacao nibs and as many tropical fruits that fit into that bowl.
I hope you enjoyed reading this post and maybe it can be useful to you when you are planning your next Hawaii trip 🙂 Safe travels and Mahalo for reading until here!
